Nordnorsk Jazzensemble feat. Arve Henriksen brings forth a new project based on the Kveni music and culture - «Kaipu»
Through collaboration with the internationally renowned composer and trumpeter Arve Henriksen, this project has brought to life some of the Kveni cultural heritage. All re-shaped, re-arranged and now brought into a new light in the spirit of jazz and improvisation.
Kaipu - which means longing - describes the current situation with the Kveni culture. There is a longing for something that the Kveni people have lost. Longing for their own cultural expressions that once existed and was not given the opportunity to be transferred or to be developed further. This is consistent with what many men and women carry within today. This project hopes to reflect some of the experiences that Kveni people have had, and it is “Kaipu” that´s essential to this.
Through different soundscapes, we get to experience re-arranged and processed old Kveni folk songs, hymns, texts, rhymes, rules and melodies. All in the spirit of jazz and improvisation.
All music and lyrics are composed, interpreted, and re-arranged by Viktor Wilhelmsen, Svein Schultz, Mariann Torset, Frida Lydia Hansen and Arve Henriksen.
Viktor Bomstad (31) from Storfjord is Troms and Finnmark County's new regional musician in joik at Scene Nord. He has a master's thesis from The Academy of Music in Oslo: "Joik as a starting point for improvisation".
During High School Viktor learned Sami after starting his process with getting to know his family’s background. He thinks it is very important that Sami and non-Sami children and young people, get the opportunity to hear Sami music and learn about the cultural heritage.
